The Push for Transparency

Citizens and environmental groups want water NDAs to end. They argue that public resources need public oversight. Companies should not hide their water use behind legal agreements. This pressure is reaching lawmakers at the state and federal level.

Lawmakers in several states are writing new rules to force tech companies to report water use publicly. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) says accurate data is key to managing water well. Without reliable numbers, regulators cannot protect communities and ecosystems.

Some tech companies have promised to use water more efficiently. Critics say voluntary promises are not enough. Real accountability requires hard numbers that anyone can see and check.
